One weekly poll and what it did to a dormant Telegram chat

A 2025 case from a 22,000-member Telegram group (SMM community) documented introducing a single recurring weekly poll — a low-effort participation prompt — into a chat whose DAU had been sliding for months. Tracked 10 weeks.

What the data shows
— Poll days saw 3.2x the message volume of an average prior day.
— DAU/MAU rose from 0.08 to 0.13 over the window — a meaningful stickiness gain for a group that size.
— Crucially, non-poll days also lifted ~20%, suggesting the poll reactivated lurkers who then stayed in the conversation.

Why it happens
Polls lower the participation threshold to one tap — no composing, no exposure — which pulls in the silent majority. The spillover to non-poll days is the interesting part: a re-engaged lurker who tapped once is more likely to type later. Telegram's native poll UI makes this near-frictionless versus Discord's bot-dependent equivalent.

The caveat
Ten weeks risks novelty inflation — recurring mechanics often decay, and this window may be too short to see the poll become wallpaper. The non-poll-day lift is small and could be noise.

Open question: do tap-only prompts build genuine community ties, or just inflate participation metrics with engagement that never deepens past a tap?
