Moving the payoff 4 seconds later raised completion by 19%
Here's a confession from a DIY channel. We used to deliver the result instantly: "Here's the finished shelf — now let me show you how." Showing the end first felt smart. Completion rate sat at 31%.
The thing is, once people saw the shelf, they had no reason to stay. We'd spent the curiosity in second one. So we re-cut to tease, not reveal: "By the end this $4 plank becomes something you'd pay $90 for — watch." The finished shelf only appeared at the very last frame.
And then people stayed to see the transformation they were promised.
The result: completion went from 31% to 50%, and rewatches doubled because the reveal was at the end.
The lesson: show the before, promise the after, but never spend the reveal in the hook.
