Case #033: The loss I caused myself
This one is a confession. $3,400 spent, $1,900 back, a 44% loss — and not one dollar of it was the offer's fault.
The campaign was a dating SOI offer on push traffic. The numbers looked terrible in the tracker: cost per conversion of $4.10 against a $3.20 payout. Underwater from day one. I spent three days tweaking bids, swapping creatives, blaming the geo.
Day four I finally pulled the postback logs side by side with the network's reporting. They didn't match. The tracker showed 830 conversions. The network had recorded 1,290.
The postback URL had a malformed parameter. Roughly 35% of my conversions were firing to the network, getting paid, and never landing in my tracker. I was optimizing against data that was lying to me — killing 'losing' creatives that were actually my winners.
Reality, once I fixed the postback and reconciled:
— actual conversions: 1,290 not 830
— real revenue: $4,130 not $1,900
— the campaign was at +21% ROI the entire time
I had spent three days strangling a profitable campaign because a single ampersand was in the wrong place in a URL.
The lesson: before you trust a loss, reconcile your tracker against the network's count — the most expensive bug in media buying is a quiet one.
