Manual action lifted by disavowing 0.4% of links — not all of them
The myth: with a manual penalty, disavow everything that scores red.
A site hit with an "unnatural links" manual action had 18,000 referring domains and a tool flagging 6,200 as toxic. Instead of nuking all 6,200, the consultant traced the actual paid-link footprint: 71 domains from one private blog network they'd bought in 2021.
They disavowed those 71, filed a reconsideration request documenting the cleanup, and the manual action was revoked in 12 days.
Actually, manual reviewers care about the manipulative links you placed, not a vendor's color chart. Disavowing 6,200 random domains would have buried the real story.
Reality check: penalty recovery is forensics, not flamethrowing. 71 beat 6,200.
