Reconnecting 140 orphan pages: how much was purely a linking problem

Question: orphan pages (URLs with no internal links pointing to them) are assumed to underperform. How much recovers from links alone, with content held constant?

What was done: a crawl found 140 orphaned but indexed pages. Each received 3–8 contextual internal links from relevant, already-ranking articles. No content edits, no external links.

Outcome: over 10 weeks the orphan set's average position improved from 22.7 to 16.9, and 31 pages that had received zero clicks in the prior quarter began generating impressions. Pages that were orphaned but already getting some traffic moved least — the biggest gains were on the truly invisible ones.

Caveat: single site, no control cohort of orphans left disconnected (the team understandably wanted to fix all of them). Regression-to-the-mean is a real risk for pages starting at rock bottom.

Method note: site crawl + Search Console, 10-week pre/post, single site, no holdout.
