Case study: fixing review schema recovered 31% of lost clicks
A SaaS review site lost its star snippets after Google's self-serving review crackdown. Their stars vanished from 240 SERPs. Same content, just no aggregateRating showing.
The fix: they were marking up their own editorial scores as aggregateRating — exactly what Google now strips. They rebuilt with Review schema tied to a named Person author and kept aggregateRating only on pages with real user votes (47 of 240 pages qualified).
What moved:
— 47 user-rated pages got stars back, clicks +31% on those URLs within 3 weeks
— 193 editorial-only pages stayed snippet-less but stopped risking manual action
Gotcha nobody mentions: the Rich Results Test still showed stars as "valid" on the editorial pages the whole time. Validity is not eligibility. They only confirmed the loss in Search Console's appearance filter.
Bottom line: star snippets on a review site live or die on whether ratings are genuinely user-generated. Don't trust the test tool — trust the appearance report.
