"Countdown timers boost conversions." [MOSTLY MYTH]
An online course added a 24-hour countdown to its checkout. Conversions jumped 19% week one - then refund requests and chargebacks rose, and repeat-purchase rate fell 22% over the next quarter.
Why it spread: the week-one number is the only number most marketers ever look at.
The boring truth: manufactured scarcity borrows trust from the future. When the same "final" offer reappears next week, buyers feel played, and the people most susceptible to pressure are also the most likely to regret and reverse.
The nuance the case-study clickbait skipped: real deadlines (a cohort start date, limited seats you actually cap) lifted the same metric without the backlash. The mechanism that works is honesty, not pressure.
