How a calculator out-earned a year of blog posts

A wedding-loans brand had published 80 articles in twelve months and won maybe a dozen links, mostly from scrapers. The setup was a content team exhausted by output that nobody quoted. The angle was to stop writing and start building one thing journalists could cite: a calculator that estimated a couple's real wedding cost by zip code, guest count, and season.

We seeded it not as a product but as a data source, pitching lifestyle and personal-finance desks with a single proof point: 'Average US wedding now $33,400, but a June Saturday in Manhattan runs $71,000.' The specificity did the work.

The result across four months: 58 referring domains, including The Knot, Brides, and two syndicated AP lifestyle roundups that linked the tool directly. Organic traffic to the loans pages rose 34% because the calculator funneled there. One editor at a bridal magazine called it 'the only vendor tool I've ever linked on purpose.'

The asset kept earning links nine months after launch with zero new outreach.

Lesson: A reporter can't link a blog post that only restates what they know. Give them a number machine instead.
