Is a public status page actually worth the effort, or just vanity?

Is a public status page actually worth the effort, or just vanity?

Q: My boss thinks a status page is busywork. Can I justify it with hard numbers?

A: Yes, and here's the case I point people to. A B2B tool with ~9,000 active accounts had no status page. During incidents, support drowned — one 40-minute outage generated 230 tickets and 4 hours of cleanup.

They launched a status page wired to their monitor, so confirmed downtime auto-posted within 60 seconds, plus an email-subscribe option. The next comparable incident, also about 40 minutes, generated 31 tickets — an 86% drop. Roughly 1,100 users had self-served via the page instead of writing in.

The deflection paid for the setup time many times over in the first month alone.

The follow-up you'll have: automate the posting. Manually updated status pages lag during the exact minutes they matter most, and a stale 'all systems operational' banner during an outage destroys trust faster than having no page at all.
