Myth: a higher native CTR means more revenue.

Myth: a higher native CTR means more revenue.
No. Here's the receipt. An e-com client running a content-recommendation widget pushed creatives from 0.18% to 0.41% CTR by swapping product shots for curiosity-gap thumbnails ("This one trick…"). Click volume more than doubled. Revenue fell 9%.

Why? They measured time-to-first-engagement on the landing page. Median dropped from 14s to 3s, and bounce climbed to 88%. The new clicks were reflex taps, not intent.

When they reverted to honest thumbnails — CTR back to 0.19% — conversions rose 22% on lower spend.

So, supposedly CTR is the health metric? It's the vanity metric. The number that mattered was the one nobody on the dashboard was looking at.
