A startup posted the same insight as text and as video. Text won on a 7-day view.
The question: does native video outperform text for B2B reach once you measure beyond day one?
The case: a devtools startup published 20 insights twice over 10 weeks — once as a text post, once as a 60–90s talking-head video (staggered two weeks apart to avoid cannibalizing). Sample: 20 matched insight-pairs.
Three findings:
— Day-1 impressions favored video by ~20%, matching the common claim.
— By day 7, text posts had overtaken video by ~35% — text kept accruing impressions while video front-loaded and flattened.
— Comments (not just reactions) ran higher on text, suggesting text invited debate while video invited passive watching.
Limitations: production quality of the videos was modest in-house; polished video might behave differently. Small sample, one niche.
What it means for B2B: the 'video beats text' claim may be a measurement-window artifact — what you conclude depends on whether you look at day 1 or day 7.
Bottom line: video peaked fast, text compounded — choose the format to match your reporting window, not folklore.
