Bigger text on her pins lifted saves by 60%
A recipe creator had a clean aesthetic — thin elegant fonts, lots of whitespace. Pretty on desktop, invisible on a phone, which is where 80% of Pinterest happens. Her saves hovered around 90 a month.
We ran a simple test. For four weeks she made pins with bold, high-contrast text overlays taking up the top third — the dish name large enough to read at thumbnail size — while keeping her old style on a control set.
The bold-text pins won clearly. Saves climbed to about 145 a month, and the readable pins out-saved the elegant ones roughly three to one. People save what they can identify while scrolling fast.
Takeaway: Your pin competes at thumbnail size on a phone. If the core promise isn't legible in a one-second scroll, design beauty won't save it — literally.
