A marketplace had 18,000 listing pages buried 5-6 clicks from the homepage. Pagination hell: page 1 → page 2 → page 47 to reach them. Google crawled the deep ones once a month, if that.
We added curated hub pages and contextual links that pulled key listings to 3 clicks max from home. No content changes.
In 10 weeks: pages now at depth 3 saw crawl frequency roughly double per server logs. Indexed listings rose from 71% to 89%. Long-tail organic to that section up 33%.
A page 6 clicks deep tells Google 'I'm not important' in the only language crawl budget understands. Depth is a vote, and you're casting it against yourself.
