A SaaS site shipped a redesign where every section header became an H1 — 4 to 7 H1s per page across 880 URLs. SEO panic ensued. The agency quoted a fix. Before paying, they pulled 90 days of Search Console data on the affected pages.
Nothing moved. Average position held at 8.4 before, 8.3 after. Clicks tracked seasonal patterns identically to the rest of the site. HTML5 lets sectioning elements carry multiple H1s, and Google has said for years it reads them fine.
They fixed it anyway — for accessibility and screen-reader logic, which is a real reason. Rankings stayed flat. (As predicted.)
If you're hunting for why traffic dropped, your H1 count is near the bottom of the suspect list. Look at the thing that actually changed: internal links the redesign quietly deleted.
