The houseplant site that was 90% Pinterest — until it wasn't
Month 1: started a houseplant care blog and leaned entirely on Pinterest because the niche is visual and pins were free traffic. By Month 4 I had 60k monthly sessions, 88% from Pinterest, making $420 on display.
Month 6: Pinterest changed something — I never found out exactly what — and my reach cratered. 60k → 14k sessions in three weeks. Revenue $420 → $110. That was the gut-punch month.
The turn: with no traffic to lose, I rebuilt around search. Took my 30 best 'why are my monstera leaves curling' style posts, added proper headings, FAQ blocks, and internal links between care guides. Search had been an afterthought; now it was the plan.
Month 11: 14k → 38k sessions, this time 70% from Google. Revenue $110 → $560. Slower-growing than Pinterest ever was, but it didn't vanish on someone else's whim.
The takeaway: free social traffic feels like a shortcut until the platform reminds you that you rent it. The Pinterest crash forced the diversification I should've built from day one.
