The map that 41 newsrooms couldn't resist
A mid-size property-management startup wanted links from regional press, the hardest crowd to reach with a national pitch. The setup: they were sitting on anonymized lease data from 60,000 units across 14 states. The angle was to stop selling a national headline and instead build one map where every local reporter saw their own city's rent burden ranked against neighbors.
The pitch went out in 41 versions, each subject line naming a single metro: 'Boise renters now spend more of their paycheck than Seattle.' We embargoed for a Tuesday so weeklies could plan.
The result over six weeks: 41 placements, 33 of them with a followed link back to the interactive, and a 22% lift in branded search. The Idaho Statesman ran it above the fold. One housing reporter emailed back, 'I've been waiting two years for someone to give me this number.'
The quiet win was syndication, where one wire pickup carried the same dataset into 70 smaller outlets that we never pitched.
Lesson: National data earns one headline. The same data, sliced by someone's hometown, earns forty.
