Swapping a KD 71 head term for 14 sub-queries: +38% sessions in 90 days
A SaaS comparison page we audited was anchored to one difficulty-score-71 head term (KD = keyword difficulty, 0-100 scale). We rebuilt it around the cluster instead.
— Head term: KD 71, 22,000 vol, page stuck at position 18
— Replacement cluster: 14 long-tail queries, avg KD 19
— Combined cluster volume: ▇▇▇▇ 9,400/mo
— Net non-brand sessions: +38% across the 90-day window
We held the URL and title fixed and only re-mapped H2s to the 14 sub-intents. No new backlinks were bought.
So what: the head term never moved, but the cluster captured more total traffic at a quarter of the difficulty.
Benchmark of the week: a KD-19 query converts to a top-5 ranking 3.4x faster than a KD-70 one in our sample.
