Edelman-LinkedIn data: 75% of buyers say thought leadership shapes who they shortlist.

Edelman-LinkedIn data: 75% of buyers say thought leadership shapes who they shortlist.

The question: does executive thought leadership influence actual purchase decisions, or is it brand theater?

The case: the annual Edelman/LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership study surveys decision-makers and buyers across industries. Sample: ~3,500+ respondents globally, self-reported attitudes — a large but attitudinal dataset.

Three findings:
— ~75% said an organization's thought leadership prompted them to research a product they hadn't considered.
— Roughly half said good thought leadership directly influenced their final purchase decision — and a similar share said weak content caused them to deprioritize a vendor.
— Decision-makers reported spending ~1+ hour per week reading thought leadership, yet most rate the supply as mediocre.

Limitations: stated preference, not observed behavior — buyers over-report rational inputs and under-report social ones. No causal pipeline data.

What it means for B2B: thought leadership is a shortlist filter that cuts both ways; mediocre content is a liability, not a neutral.

Bottom line: a large survey says content shapes deals, but it measures what buyers say drives them — directional, not a ROI receipt.
