Month 9: the knife-sharpening site that clawed back from a 71% drop
Month 1: classic build — 80 articles on knife sharpening, whetstones, honing rods. By Month 5 it hit 41k sessions and $1,150/month.
Then the September helpful-content update hit and it fell to 12k sessions in nine days. Revenue $1,150 → $340. I genuinely thought it was dead and listed it on a marketplace for $9k. No serious offers, which in hindsight saved me.
I pulled the listing and did something boring: I deleted 22 articles that were thin 'best whetstone under $X' roundups with zero original testing, and rewrote 9 cornerstone guides with actual sharpening photos of my own knives at different grits.
Month 9 — the recovery wasn't a bounce, it was a grind. 12k → 33k sessions over four months. Revenue back to $940.
The failure I'll admit: I waited too long to cut the thin pages because they were technically my 'top traffic' before the update. They were also the exact pages Google flagged.
The takeaway: after a quality update, your best-performing thin content is often the liability, not the asset. Pruning beat publishing.
