E-commerce site, classic bloated footer: 94 links on every single page — 'About', 'Careers', payment icons, every category, every policy. 94 links × every URL on the site.
We cut it to 14. Kept the legally required and genuinely useful ones. Killed the rest.
Result over 8 weeks: money pages picked up internal links that were previously diluted across that footer sludge. Top 30 commercial URLs gained an average of 2.4 positions. Crawl stats showed Googlebot reallocating hits toward product pages.
Every sitewide footer link siphons a slice of equity off every page you own. 'But users might need it' is not the same as 'this deserves a sitewide link.'
