An affiliate site that cut traffic 40% and grew revenue
Context: a published case from an affiliate-site operator documented a deliberate pruning of 220 thin articles from a 600-page review site over one quarter.
What was done:
— Removed informational posts with near-zero conversion (top-of-funnel 'what is' content)
— Consolidated the remaining commercial-intent reviews
— Reinvested editing time into the 40 pages that historically drove the most affiliate clicks
Reported outcome:
— Organic sessions fell roughly 40% (the pruned pages had carried high volume)
— Affiliate revenue rose from about $11,200 to $14,800/month
— Revenue-per-session climbed from $0.018 to $0.041
Caveats: a single operator's account, no holdout, and an algorithm update landed mid-quarter — so causation between pruning and the revenue lift is confounded. 'Thin' was defined by the operator, not an external rubric.
Implications: the case supports the intent-over-volume thesis in affiliate work, but the overlapping update means we cannot attribute the gain cleanly to pruning.
What we still don't know: how much of the lift would have happened from the update alone, with no pruning at all.
