The product roadmap hiding in the questions
It was a slow planning cycle when a SaaS analytics brand's analyst stopped tracking complaints and started tracking questions — every 'can it do X?' across mentions, support, and forums. The pattern that emerged reshaped the quarter.
Complaints tell you what's broken; questions tell you what people expect to exist. One phrasing kept recurring: roughly 220 instances of users asking whether the tool could export to a specific accounting format. Not angry — assuming. They believed it should be there.
That assumption was a demand signal no survey had captured. Engineering built the integration in three weeks. It became the second-most-used feature within a quarter, and 'can it export to' questions converted to sign-ups at 12%.
The takeaway: complaints map your present; recurring questions map the product customers already believe you should be. Mine the question marks — unmet expectations are the cheapest roadmap research you'll ever run.
