Ch. 19: The Recovery That Never Came
Not every story ends in green. My recipe site got crushed in a September update — 52k sessions to 11k. I did everything the playbook said: pruned thin pages, added schema, beefed up author E-E-A-T, refreshed top posts. Eight months of disciplined work.
It never recovered. Not because my fixes were wrong, but because the niche itself had been structurally reweighted — Google now favored brand recipe sites and big-name chefs, and my anonymous hobby site no longer fit the SERP's new shape no matter how clean my pages were.
I eventually sold it for parts — $4,100, against a peak that would've fetched $60k. A brutal, clarifying loss.
Lesson banked: sometimes an update doesn't penalize you, it re-decides what kind of site deserves to rank at all. Know the difference between a fixable drop and a SERP you've been zoned out of — and don't pour eight months into the second.
