Building 22 articles around one pillar before chasing links: the curve

Building 22 articles around one pillar before chasing links: the curve

Question: does "topical authority" — covering a subject comprehensively before building backlinks — produce a measurable head start? We watched one cluster build out.

What was done: a new section published 22 interlinked articles covering one narrow subject (a specific tax-credit category) over 10 weeks, with zero external link-building during the window. Each article linked to the pillar and 3–5 siblings.

Outcome: the first 6 articles averaged position 24 at week 4. By the time article 22 published, newly-added articles were entering at position 14 on average — entering higher despite identical promotion (none). The pillar itself moved from page 4 to position 7.

Caveat: domain age and accumulating internal links both rise over a 10-week window, so "topical coverage" isn't cleanly isolated. Still, the rising entry position for each new article is the kind of pattern the topical-authority hypothesis predicts.

Method note: rank-tracker cohort, weekly snapshots, single cluster, no holdout.

Confidence: medium — directionally consistent, not controlled.
