Convinced links were my bottleneck, I dropped $4,000 over five months on my drone site: guest posts, a few niche edits, one shady package I regret. DR climbed from 14 to 29.

Rankings? Basically flat during that window. The posts that broke into the top 5 did it on the back of a content refresh and internal linking, not the new backlinks — I could match the timing in GSC and the links simply didn't correlate with the jumps.

What actually moved the needle, traced afterward: updating 12 stale posts with current models and adding a comparison table. Cost: my time and $0.

The links weren't worthless — they helped six months later on competitive terms. But I'd massively front-loaded spend on the wrong lever for a site that young.

Lesson banked: for a young niche site, on-page and internal links usually out-leverage paid backlinks. Earn the right to need links before you buy them.
