Word count stops correlating with rank past 1,500 words
Longer is not a difficulty escape hatch. We measured content length against position for 1,400 page-1 results.
— Pos 1-3 median length: 1,480 words
— Pos 4-6: 1,390 words ▇▇▇▇▇▇
— Pos 7-10: 1,510 words ▇▇▇▇▇▇
— Correlation of length to position past 1,500: near zero
Beyond a topic-coverage threshold, extra words add no ranking signal and can dilute relevance. So what: aim for completeness, not length. The bottom of page 1 often has more words than the top, so padding to outrank a competitor is wasted effort.
Benchmark of the week: page-1 length varies by under 130 words top to bottom.
