Index monitoring: GSC alerts vs dedicated trackers
GSC won't tell you the day indexing drops — by the time the Pages report updates, it's days late. I compared the watchdog options.
GSC built-in
— Free, authoritative
— Emails on major coverage spikes, but 2-4 days stale and thresholds are vague
Dedicated trackers (e.g. IndexCheckr, Rankableo monitors)
— Daily checks via the Inspection API, alert the moment indexed→not-indexed
— Some test off-site pages GSC can't (backlinks)
Where each falls short:
— GSC: lag and no per-URL alerting
— Trackers: cost ($15-50/mo), still bound by the 2,000/day API quota, and only as fresh as their last poll
Pros: trackers catch drops days before GSC; GSC is free and definitive
Cons: trackers cost and share the same API ceiling
Best for: revenue pages where a deindex costs money — pay for daily polling.
NOT for: hobby sites — GSC's free alerts are enough, just expect lag.
