Does the welcome message do anything?

Every server has one. Few have ever tested whether it earns its place — and the available evidence is humbling.

What the data shows
Where onboarding flows have been compared, the generic auto-welcome ("Welcome @newcomer to the server!") shows little measurable retention effect. What does correlate with retention is a human acknowledgment in the first hours — a real member or mod responding to a newcomer's first post — and a clear, single "do this next" instruction. The bot greeting is largely decorative; the human reply is not.

Why it happens
The auto-welcome is obviously automated, so it carries no social signal — newcomers discount it instantly. A human reply, by contrast, proves the room is alive and that participation gets noticed, which directly addresses the new member's core fear of posting into a void. Telegram's join-notice spam is even more ignorable, which is partly why many channels suppress it entirely.

The caveat
Human greetings don't scale, and servers that can greet every newcomer are usually small or well-staffed — confounding effort with the greeting itself. No clean A/B of "same server, greeting on/off" is widely published.

Open question: if the active ingredient is human acknowledgment, can it be semi-automated (prompting a real member to greet) without losing the authenticity that made it work?
