A beauty creator with 60k followers split 50 videos: 25 with #fyp #foryou #viral #trending, 25 with three specific descriptive tags, 25 with no tags at all. (Three arms, ~17 each.)
Median views: generic-viral tags 11,200. Descriptive tags 12,800. No tags 11,900.
Nobody actually tested this before parroting it. The #fyp arm came last.
The mechanism: #fyp appears on roughly a billion videos. As a classification signal it's pure noise — it tells the system nothing about who should see you. Descriptive tags at least narrow the test cluster slightly.
Hashtags are weak metadata, not a distribution lever. If you use them, describe the content. The viral-tag superstition is cargo-cult behavior.
