Retention analytics for Shorts: native vs paid tools
You can't fix a Short you can't diagnose. Tested where the data actually lives.
YouTube Studio native (free) wins:
— The only source of true swipe-away and loop data
— 'Viewed vs swiped away' is the Shorts-specific metric that matters
— Per-second retention curve shows your hook fail point
Third-party dashboards (VidIQ/Metricool, $):
— Aggregate trends across many Shorts
— Nicer comparison views over time
The truth: no paid tool sees deeper Shorts retention data than Studio — YouTube doesn't expose it via API. Paid tools just repackage what's already free.
Verdict: live in YouTube Studio's retention curve for diagnosing individual Shorts; add a paid dashboard only if you need cross-Short trend views at scale. Skip paying for 'Shorts analytics' that just mirror Studio.
Not for: anyone under 20 Shorts published. Just read Studio.
