I counted the word 'you' in my hooks. The pattern was brutal.
And then I did something nerdy: I audited 30 of my openers. My top 10 by retention averaged 2.1 "you/your" per hook. My bottom 10 averaged 0.3.
Here's the thing — my flops were about me. "I found a way to schedule posts faster" sat at 44%. I rewrote it pointed outward: "You're wasting an hour a week scheduling posts the slow way."
The result: that one went from 44% to 69% at three seconds, and it held the channel's best save rate that month at 5.1%.
The lesson: count the "you" in your first line. If it's zero, the viewer isn't in the story yet. Two is plenty. The hook is a mirror, not a memoir.
