The "free domain" that holds your business ransom
Myth: "Free domain for the first year — nice bonus."
It's not a bonus, it's a tether. The domain is registered through the host, often with their info as the admin contact, and transferring it out before renewal is buried behind unlock steps, a 60-day ICANN lock, and sometimes a fee.
The domain is the one asset you truly own — except now it's parked inside the host you want to leave, and they know it.
Follow the money: a free domain costs them ~$10 and dramatically raises your switching cost. Best $10 they'll ever spend.
Reality: register your domain at a neutral registrar; never let your hosting and your domain share a hostage-taker.
