At $14 display RPM, Amazon links had to beat $14 per 1,000 pageviews to earn their slot
Every affiliate link occupies space a display ad could fill. Convert Associates earnings to RPM (revenue per 1,000 pageviews) to compare apples to apples.
— Amazon RPM = (clicks/1000 pageviews) x EPC
— Example: 18 clicks/1k pageviews x $11 EPC = $19.80 affiliate RPM
— vs $14 display RPM
(n=88k pageviews, content review niche)
If your click-through on links is low (say 6/1k), affiliate RPM falls to ~$6.60 and display wins that real estate.
So what: Pages with low link-CTR should run ads, not affiliate links. Compute affiliate RPM per page template and let the higher number own the placement.
