Ch. 12: I Killed the Affiliate Model on My Own Site
My macro-photography site pulled 35k sessions at a humiliating affiliate conversion — camera gear has 90-day research cycles and 2-4% commissions. I was earning $900/mo on traffic that should've done triple.
The audience was engaged, just not buying through links. So I built one $29 product: a Lightroom preset pack plus a focus-stacking field guide, made from techniques I already taught for free. Launched to my 4,100-person email list I'd been quietly collecting.
First month: 210 sales, $6,090. Recurring monthly since at $2,800-3,400, at 96% margin, immune to Amazon rate cuts and link decay.
The affiliate links still earn their $900. But the product turned the same traffic into 4x the income and an asset Google can't touch.
Lesson banked: when your audience is engaged but won't convert on affiliate links, the problem may be the model, not the traffic. Sometimes you are the better offer.
