Canonical conflicts: when Google picks a URL you didn't
'Page is not indexed: Duplicate, Google chose different canonical' — the status that confuses everyone. I trust Inspection over my own tags here.
What Inspection does well:
— Shows BOTH your declared canonical and Google's chosen canonical side by side
— That gap is the whole diagnosis — if they differ, your signals are contradicting each other
Where it falls short:
— It won't rank the conflicting signals — link equity, sitemap, internal links and rel=canonical all vote, and you can't see the tally
— No bulk view; you check one URL at a time
Common culprits it exposes:
— Self-referencing canonical missing
— HTTP/HTTPS or www/non-www splits
— Parameter URLs canonicalizing wrong
Pros: shows Google's actual choice, free, definitive
Cons: no signal weighting, single-URL only
Best for: untangling duplicate-canonical exclusions.
NOT for: bulk audits — pair with a crawler to find the pattern first.
