MYTH: A high free-trial signup rate means your content converts
Everyone celebrates trial signups in their dashboard. Free-trial volume is the most flattering, least bankable metric in SaaS affiliate work.
Reality: you're usually paid on the paid conversion, not the trial. The number that matters is trial-to-paid, and for self-serve SaaS that's commonly 10-25%. So 200 trials might be 30 payments, might be 8.
Worse, trial-heavy programs tempt affiliates to optimize for the click and the signup, generating exactly the low-intent traffic that never converts and drags your account's conversion stats down, sometimes enough to get you deprioritized.
A dashboard full of trials is a dashboard full of maybes. Track trial-to-paid by source or you're flying blind on the only step that pays.
Verdict: signups are applause; paid conversions are the box office.
