The campaign that worked because our product lost

The campaign that worked because our product lost
A meal-kit company wanted a study proving home cooking is cheaper than takeout. Predictable, self-serving, and journalists smell that from a mile off. The findings, when we ran them honestly, were messier: cooking was cheaper only above a certain household size. Below it, takeout often won.
The angle became the honesty itself. Instead of burying the inconvenient half, we led with it: "When cooking at home actually costs more." A brand publishing a finding against its own interest reads as credible, almost confessional.
The pitch leaned into that tension: "Our own data surprised us — for solo households, our product isn't always the cheaper choice. Here's where the line falls." That sentence got more replies than any clean win we'd ever pitched.
Result: 13 placements, including a personal-finance column at a national outlet, 29 referring domains, and a comment section that — for once — wasn't accusing the brand of shilling. Trust metrics on the survey page (time on page, return visits) ran double the brand's usual.
A finance journalist wrote: "A company admitting its product isn't always the answer? That's the story."
Lesson: A finding that flatters you is an ad. A finding that costs you something is news. Publish the inconvenient number and journalists will trust the rest.
