That 'huge' referring domain count is one footer link
Here's the trick inflating half the profiles you audit. A brand brags about 50,000 referring domains. Pull the breakdown and 48,000 of them are a single sitewide footer or theme-credit link.
— One WordPress theme with a 'Powered by X' footer credit can manufacture tens of thousands of unique referring domains overnight, each passing almost nothing.
— Filter by 'one link per domain' and 'links from content body' and the 50k profile collapses to maybe 900 real editorial mentions.
The play is old — sponsor a theme or a widget, ride its install base. Spotted again recently across a couple of 'fastest-growing' martech tools whose link graphs are 95% boilerplate footer.
Lesson for auditors: never quote total referring domains without the dofollow-content-link subset beside it.
