Header bidding changed programmatic advertising. Most content publishers are still not using it correctly.
The promise of header bidding: multiple demand sources compete in real-time for every impression, driving CPMs up through genuine competition. The reality: if your wrapper is misconfigured or your timeout settings are too aggressive, you're cutting off high-paying bids before they arrive.
Timeout tuning matters more than most people realize. A 500ms timeout sounds fast, but premium DSPs sometimes need 600-800ms to return bids. Raising your timeout to 800ms while monitoring page speed impact has returned 8-15% RPM lifts for publishers who've tested it carefully.
Also worth auditing: your bid adapter list. Having 20 SSPs connected sounds like more competition. In practice, 5-8 quality adapters with real budgets in your niche will outperform a crowded, low-quality list. Remove adapters that haven't won a bid in 90 days.
Header bidding is a system that rewards active management.
