Q: My monitor shows 99.95% uptime, so I'm meeting my 99.9% SLA, right?
A: Maybe, but those two numbers often measure different things, and conflating them gets people in trouble. Your monitor's percentage counts every check failure, including blips, third-party hiccups, and its own measurement gaps. A contractual SLA usually has carve-outs: scheduled maintenance, force-majeure, failures of the customer's own setup, and minimum-duration rules where a 30-second blip doesn't count.
The myth is that the dashboard number equals the SLA number. They rarely match.
Recommendation: calculate SLA on the same terms as your contract, exclude agreed maintenance, apply the minimum-incident-duration rule, and use confirmed (multi-location) downtime only.
Anticipating the follow-up: keep both numbers. The raw monitor figure is your honest internal health; the adjusted one is what you report.
