Q: Should my monitors keep alerting during planned maintenance, just in case?
A: No, and leaving them on does real harm. Alerts that fire during known, scheduled work are pure noise, and they're a leading cause of the team learning to ignore the pager. They also pollute your uptime stats, dragging your SLA numbers down for downtime you chose.
The myth is that silencing monitors is risky, that you might miss something. The actual risk is conditioning everyone to dismiss alerts.
Recommendation: use scheduled maintenance windows that suppress alerting and exclude that period from SLA calculations. Set a hard end time so the window can't silently swallow a real outage that starts late.
Follow-up: keep one channel logging during the window so you can still review what happened, just without paging anyone.
