Myth: more variants means you learn more, faster
'Test 5 headlines at once, find the best one!' Tempting. Math says no.
Every extra arm splits your traffic and multiplies your false-positive risk. Five variants = five chances for noise to fake a winner. And each arm gets a fifth of the sample, so each takes way longer to resolve.
I ran a 6-headline test once. 'Winner' emerged, I shipped it, it didn't replicate. Classic multiple-comparison trap.
Now: 2 arms, control plus my single best hypothesis. Sharper, faster, cleaner read.
More arms isn't more learning — it's more ways to fool yourself.
Got a multi-variant test queued? Cut it to control + your strongest contender. Run a sequence, not a buffet. Report back.
