"Cross the next follower milestone and brand deals come" — inbound demand isn't a step function

"Cross the next follower milestone and brand deals come" — inbound demand isn't a step function

The belief that follower milestones unlock sponsorship treats brand demand as automatic above a threshold. The data shows demand is niche-gated, not size-gated.

Context. Brands buy audiences that convert for their product, not audiences of a certain size. A threshold mindset assumes size substitutes for fit.

Findings. Sponsorship-rate and deal-frequency studies through 2025 find that micro and mid-tier creators in high-commercial niches secure more deals per follower than larger creators in low-commercial niches — and at competitive effective rates. Advertiser demand correlates with audience purchase relevance and demonstrated conversion history far more than with raw count. Many large general-interest accounts report sparse inbound sponsorship despite size.

Caveats. Deal data is self-reported and confidential, biased toward creators who disclose wins. Inbound demand also depends on discoverability and outreach effort, which datasets rarely control for.

Implication. Chasing a follower milestone to trigger deals optimizes the wrong variable. Niche commercial relevance and proven conversion drive inbound demand.

What we still don't know: the function linking audience size, niche, and inbound deal volume is unmodeled in public data.
