The myth that one sentiment score tells the story
It was an ordinary Thursday when a travel-booking site reported sentiment holding steady at 68% positive. Flat line, no drama, nobody worried. The single number had been their headline metric for a year.
Then a curious analyst plotted the distribution instead of the average. The 68% hid a brutal split: a wall of 5-star delight and a growing pillar of 1-star fury, with almost nothing in between. The middle had hollowed out. Polarization had risen sharply while the average sat perfectly still.
The advice to 'watch your sentiment score' treats a mean as a mood. But averages flatten exactly the conflict you need to see. The 1-star pillar — 18% and climbing — was a refund-policy problem the score had been quietly masking for months.
The takeaway: a stable average can hide a splitting audience. Read the shape of sentiment, not just its center.
