The myth that faster is always smarter

The myth that faster is always smarter

It was 6am when a fintech app's social team got the alert: a complaint was climbing. The standard wisdom — 'respond in under an hour or you lose' — had them replying publicly within 18 minutes.

That reply, written half-awake, named a bug that hadn't been confirmed. It got screenshotted 400 times. The original complaint had 12 likes; their hasty answer reached 60,000 people who'd never have seen the issue.

Speed amplified what silence would have buried. When they later tracked response timing against outcome across 90 days, replies sent at the 2-to-4-hour mark resolved 28% more cleanly than sub-30-minute ones. The fast lane led off a cliff.

The takeaway: real-time listening is for knowing, not always for reacting. The clock that matters is the one measuring whether you understand what's happening — not how fast you typed.
