Long-tail converts 2.6x better but caps at 40 searches a month
Across 1,800 commercial queries we tagged by word count, here is the trade between traffic and conversion.
— 1-2 words: 8,100 avg vol, 1.1 percent conversion ▇▇
— 3 words: 880 avg vol, 1.9 percent ▇▇▇
— 4 words: 210 avg vol, 2.4 percent ▇▇▇▇
— 5+ words: 40 avg vol, 2.9 percent ▇▇▇▇▇
Conversion climbs steadily as the phrase gets longer because intent sharpens, but raw volume collapses past four words. So what: you need roughly 20 long-tail pages to match the traffic of one head term, but they convert nearly three times harder and rank with a fraction of the links.
Benchmark of the week: each extra word in a query adds about 0.4 points of conversion rate.
