Sitemap hreflang vs head tags: which one Google trusts more
Neither. Google treats both as equally valid sources. The question you should ask is which one you can keep correct with less effort, and that answer depends on how your site is built.
Sitemap wins when:
— You have many locales and every page would need dozens of link tags
— URLs are generated from a database, so a script can rebuild the whole map nightly
— Your front end is JavaScript-heavy and server-side head control is unreliable
HTML head wins when:
— You have a small number of locales and a template engine that already knows the alternates
— You want every crawler and validation tool to see the relationship immediately
— Your sitemap pipeline is owned by another team and changes slowly
The failure that makes people think one method is "weaker": the two sources disagree. The head says the French page is /fr/produit/, the sitemap still says /fr/product/. Google does not average them out, it discards the conflicting cluster.
Pick the source you can keep in sync with your canonical logic. Then delete the other one, so there is nothing to disagree with.
