"Pick a server near your visitors" misses the point
They told you: "Choose a data center close to your audience for speed."
For a cached, static-ish site, origin distance barely matters once a CDN sits in front — edge nodes serve your visitors, not the origin. Meanwhile a "nearby" but oversold box with 400ms server-response time beats a far one at nothing.
The map pin is an easy thing to optimize and a satisfying thing to sell. The throttled CPU behind it is the variable that actually decides your speed.
Reality: latency to a slow server is the least of your problems.
