Deep dive: pruning a lander to a single conversion goal, methodically

Deep dive: pruning a lander to a single conversion goal, methodically

The "attention ratio" concept (popularized by Oli Gardner / Unbounce) frames a lander's discipline as the ratio of things a visitor can do to things you want them to do. The ideal is 1:1 — one page, one action, no escape hatches. The supporting logic draws on choice-overload research (the Iyengar & Lepper jam study is the touchstone): more options can lower the probability of any choice being made, because comparison and second-guessing cost effort and induce paralysis.

The pruning playbook:

— Step 1: Count every link and button on the page. Each is an exit or a distraction unless it serves the one goal. Write the count down — it's usually shocking.
— Step 2: Strip the global navigation on campaign pages. A nav bar is a buffet of escape routes; on a focused lander it leaks intent built up by your copy.
— Step 3: Remove competing calls-to-action. "Buy" and "Learn more" and "Contact us" on one screen split the decision; pick the single next step and cut the rest or demote them to plain text below the fold.
— Step 4: Audit footer links. They feel harmless but offer easy exits at the moment of decision; keep only legally required ones on campaign landers.
— Step 5: Disarm outbound links. Where an external link is necessary (a partner, a source), open it in a new tab so the lander survives the click.
— Step 6: Recount and target a near-1:1 ratio. You won't always hit it, but every link you justify-or-cut tightens the funnel.

Mechanism: every alternative action is a fork where the visitor can leave the path to conversion. Reducing forks doesn't manipulate — it removes the friction of deciding among irrelevant options so the relevant decision gets full attention.

The honest limit: choice overload is real but context-dependent — later research found it doesn't always replicate, and informed buyers sometimes want options. A bare lander suits cold paid traffic; a considered B2B purchase may need comparison material. Match the pruning aggression to the buyer's stage, not to a dogma.

TL;DR
— Target a near-1:1 attention ratio: one page, one action, minimal exits.
— Strip nav, kill competing calls-to-action, prune footer links, open outbound links in new tabs.
— Choice overload is context-dependent — prune hard for cold traffic, less for considered buys.
