"Red buttons convert best." [BUSTED]
The "red beat green by 21%" HubSpot test became the most over-cited result in CRO history.
Why it spread: it's a single, screenshotable rule and it lets people skip thinking.
The truth: that test had nothing to do with red. The winning button contrasted with a green page; red just happened to pop. On a red-heavy site, red buttons vanish. Color has no inherent conversion power — contrast and visual hierarchy do.
What the advice skipped: the button should be the most visually distinct interactive element on the screen, whatever color that requires. Stop copying HubSpot's red. Copy their contrast.
